Throughout the week, the players and coaches of the Moffat County High School volleyball team have been toiling away in the gym, smacking balls over the net, diving to the floor and doing everything else they normally do to practice for an upcoming game.

But, today’s game isn’t a typical one.

Not only is it the first of three home volleyball games during Homecoming Week, but it’s also against the Bulldogs’ main rival.

The volleyball team will host Steamboat Springs today, starting with the freshmen game at 4 p.m.

Coach Sandy Camilletti said she expects the matchups to be good ones, partly because the crowd will likely be bigger.

“Steamboat games are always fun,” she said. “A lot of people turn up and want to see us win.”

This is Camilletti’s first year as the head coach for the volleyball team, but like her players who were on the team last year, she wants a victory. Last year, the varsity team lost to Steamboat both at home and away.

“We’re coming off a win with Glenwood (Springs), so I’m hoping to keep it up,” Camilletti said. “Steamboat normally has some big hitters, so we’ve got to be able to block them and shut them down.”

Junior Adrie Camp said she is mentally ready to take on Steamboat after sitting on the varsity bench last year. Now a starter for MCHS, she said she has improved her attitude, knowledge of the game and hitting prowess since last season.

“I feel pretty confident, especially after Glenwood,” she said. “We all did our part to make that win happen.”

The team’s week — their busiest of the season so far — will culminate with a Saturday doubleheader against Eagle Valley in the morning and Battle Mountain in the afternoon.

“Eagle Valley is the one I’m watching out for,” Camilletti said. “They’ve got some big, tall girls and they’re a solid team.”

Eagle Valley, with an overall record of 8-1, is undefeated in the Western Slope League.

Camilletti said she does not expect the added workload of the weekend to hinder her team.

“We work pretty hard in practice, so they’re used to it,” she said. “We just want to make sure we have all the kinks worked out.”

Camp said she expects the team’s performance during the week to set the tone, a result she is all but certain about.

“When we win on Thursday, it’ll carry us into the weekend,” she said. “We might feel pretty tired and worn-out Sunday, but it’s better than feeling tired and upset about losing.”
