MCHS volleyball loses to rival Steamboat

For part of the matchup, it was everything anyone expected out of the Moffat County -Steamboat Springs rivalry.

But while the squads were evenly matched in some parts, Steamboat took over in others and beat the Moffat County volleyball team, 3-0, on Thursday in the Kelly Meek Gymnasium.

"I think that's been our issue all year," Bulldogs coach Sandy Camilletti said. "Opponents score two or three or we get down by two or three, and we just lose our confidence.

"But we're not even halfway through league season. I just told them that. It's going to take hard work, and we have to be mentally prepared."

In the first game, it looked like it would be a match of imposing wills, the Bulldogs and Sailors trading point after point. But with the game tied at eight, Steamboat ripped off six of the next eight points to take a commanding lead, eventually winning, 25-18.

"The first eight points of that first game was great volleyball for both teams really," Steamboat coach Wendy Hall said.

Much like the first game,

the Bulldogs and Sailors went back and forth in Game 2. The two teams traded points until tied at 13, when Steamboat again pulled away.

The Sailors took advantage of some sloppy Bulldog play and went up 18-13 in short time, winning 25-21

In the third game, Steamboat jumped out to a huge lead. Up 20-9, the Sailors started to struggle.

The Bulldogs cut the lead to 23-22 before the Sailors closed out the match with a 25-22 win.

"Momentum can shift on you, and it did," Hall said. "But I'm proud that we kind of battled our way back in the end. It's something this team is doing better with this year. I've seen it against Glenwood and Delta.

"Places where we were last year and the trouble we were getting ourselves in, we weren't getting back in it. I've seen this team get itself back in it this year."

Moffat County next plays at 11 a.m. Saturday at Eagle Valley and at Battle Mountain at 5 p.m.

Steamboat does the same but plays opposite teams first.
