MCHS varsity wrestling starts season with Mountain Vista Survivor Series

=Cody Adams, top, works on his moves with fellow junior Ben Winslow during Moffat County High School varsity wrestling practice Wednesday. Adams will wrestle in the 189-pound weight class, and Winslow will represent the Bulldogs in the 215-pound class at the Mountain Vista Survivor Series tournament Friday in Highlands Ranch.

For the first wrestling meet of the year, coach Roman Gutierrez has two goals for his team.

Compete and improve.

Starting at 1 p.m. Friday in Highlands Ranch, the Moffat County High School boys varsity wrestling team will compete in the Mountain Vista Survivor Series.

With a young team — only four seniors will compete — Gutierrez said he hopes his wrestlers can improve themselves in the two-day match.

"You can see with some of the younger kids the technique we need to work on and some of the mistakes," he said. "We're going to be making mistakes all year long, but hopefully we can address the major ones and start clearing those up."

Last year, Moffat County finished second to Mountain Vista at the Survivor Series with a 92-36 record.

This year, the team will lean heavily on its upperclassmen, Gutierrez said.

"We have a good group of seniors — you always need to have a good nucleus for a team to excel," he said. "Without a doubt, the young kids are going to get an eye opener."

Freshmen Hunter Richardson (103-pound class), Jacob Teeter (112) and Garrett Stewart (125) will see their first action at the high school level.

Sophomores include Jake Blevins, wrestling in the 130-pound class, and Trevor Quick in the 135-pound class.

Juniors include Cody Nelson (119-pound class), Charlie Griffiths (140), Cody Adams (189) and Ben Winslow (215).

Seniors Nick Chew (145-pound class), Nathan Tomlin (152), Matt Linsacum (160) and Scott Mann (171) return for their last year of Moffat County wrestling.

The first meet of the year also could tell a lot about where the program is headed in the future, Gutierrez said.

"We'll be young for the next couple of years," he said. "When these seniors leave, more than half of our team will be freshmen and sophomores. The sophomores and freshmen this year will have to step up and make big gains to be successful."

Helping them learn the ropes will be a solid senior class, Gutierrez said.

"They work hard, they're a good group to work with," he said. "We see the older kids helping some of the younger kids on technique. It's good, we enjoy watching these kids help the other kids."

It can be hard to judge from an early season match how a team will perform in the long run, Gutierrez said, but facing teams the Bulldogs won't see again will teach the wrestlers new moves.

Like the Jan. 8 Las Vegas tournament, seeing new and different teams allows his team to pick up on special moves they otherwise wouldn't in the Western Slope League, Gutierrez said.

But, before Las Vegas, Moffat County will try to start its season off with a strong performance in Highlands Ranch.

"The main thing is," Gutierrez said, "we're going to wrestle 10 duels and hopefully they keep improving from one match to the next."
