MCHS varsity wrestling places 6th in Survivor Series

Team has 2 overall champions

Going into the Mountain Vista Survivor Series, wrestling coach Roman Gutierrez knew Moffat County High School would be at a disadvantage.

Without a wrestler in the heavyweight class, and an injury to senior Matt Linsacum, Moffat County began the Friday tournament in Highlands Ranch in the hole, Gutierrez said.

"We were down, 18-0, before we started," he said.

But Moffat County's top wrestlers did what their coach expected them to do Friday and Saturday.

"The kids we expect to do well did well," Gutierrez said. "And for some of the younger kids, it was definitely an eye-opener."

Junior Charlie Griffiths (140-pound class) and senior Nathan Tomlin (152-pound class) won their respective weight classes, compiling identical 10-0 records with seven pins apiece.

Moffat County, which finished sixth overall, also was rewarded with the sportsmanship award.

The freshman class came out of the Survivor Series with positive results.

At 112 pounds, Jacob Teeter went 5-5 with three pins, and Garrett Stewart went 3-7 with two pins in the 125 pound-class.

Sophomores had mixed results in the first meet of the year, as Jake Blevins finish 0-10 in the 130-pound class, and Trevor Quick finished 1-9 in the 135-pound class.

Juniors found success on the mat, as Cody Nelson (9-1, six pins in the 119-pound class), Cody Adams (8-2, six pins in the 189-pound class) and Ben Winslow (6-4, four pins in the 215-pound class) all finished with winning records.

Not to be outdone, the seniors led the way for the Bulldogs.

Nick Chew (5-5, four pins in the 145-pound class), Linsacum (2-0, one pin in the 160-pound class before injury) and Scott Mann (7-3, six pins in the 171-pound class) all showed why they are expected to lead the team this winter.

Overall, Moffat County finished with a 66-46 record, including 46 pins — good enough for sixth, with Widefield High School taking the top spot.

With the experience the underclassmen picked up from the meet, Gutierrez expects the team to keep improving.

"Some of the younger kids took steps, and will continue to develop," Gutierrez said. "Now, they know what to expect on varsity."
