Garrett Stewart was up 5-0 after the first period Friday against Palisade’s Trevor Garcia and looked to be riding to an easy victory.

Stewart, a Moffat County High School junior, was trying to get the MCHS varsity wrestling team’s first win in the Bulldogs lone home meet of the season, but it wasn’t going to come easy.

Garcia trailed 8-2 heading into the third and final period of the 138-pound match-up, but used a combination of takedowns and nearfalls to tie the match, 11-11, in the final 10 seconds to force overtime.

Stewart said he had no energy left heading into the overtime period, but somehow turned Garcia’s attempted throw into a takedown and scored the pin with 14 seconds remaining.

“I knew I had no chance with error and I just wanted to keep with him in the third period, but I let him get me down,” Stewart said after the match. “There was a big chance I could lose, so I had to keep fighting and never give up and just look to get two points from a takedown.”

Stewart and sophomore Curtis Bowser, at 285 pounds, were the only two Bulldog wrestlers to win against Palisade in a 68-12 defeat.

However, the Bulldogs fought hard in the next dual match-up against Steamboat, forcing a 30-30 tie, after the Sailors also fell to Palisade, 76-6.

The Bulldogs and Sailors each scored four victories via pin and two victories via forfeit.

Stewart said he was exhausted after his match against Garcia and wanted to go into his match against Steamboat junior Dane Koepfer looking for an early pin.

The MCHS junior was able to do just that, pinning Koepfer early in the second period.

“I was still exhausted, so I was looking to get out fast and own the match,” Stewart said. “(Koepfer) was good with his Granby rolls but he wasn’t as tough on his feet, so I knew if I needed to I could score a lot of points from takedowns.”

MCHS senior Jake Blevins fell in his first match by major decision at 160 pounds, 12-4, to Palisade’s Brice Hawley.

Blevins said he wanted to leave his final home meet of his career with a victory.

Against Steamboat sophomore Connor O’Brien, Blevins controlled the match the whole way and scored a pin in the third period.

“I didn’t feel good and was mad after losing (to Palisade),” Blevins said. “I wanted to bounce back and get a good win at home. (O’Brien) was strong and quick, but I don’t think he had as much experience as me.

“It felt good to go out on a win.”

Steamboat junior Casey Williams was the lone Sailor grappler to win both his matches.

Williams, wrestling at 152 pounds, pinned Eli Chavez from Palisade before sticking Moffat County’s Curtis Dunlap in the first round.

Williams said he was excited to get back on track and feels ready to go with regionals just over three weeks away.

“I am starting to do a lot more moves and I am more motivated than I was earlier in the season,” he said. “As I make a push for regionals, I need to be ready to wrestle in every match and make sure I work hard off the mat in conditioning.”

The Bulldogs get back on the mat Saturday for the Rifle Tournament while the Sailors go to Lake County High School.
