MCHS graduation ceremony set for Saturday

Moffat County High School principal Thom Schnellinger, far left, tells the Class of 2011 what to expect during graduation rehearsal Thursday in the gymnasium. At 10 a.m. Saturday at the high school, 900 Finley Lane, 136 seniors will walk the stage and turn their tassels.

Moffat County High School seniors had one final order of business Thursday — graduation rehearsal.

For nearly two hours, the 136 students of the Class of 2011 received pointers on attire, poise and how to turn their tassels.

The graduation ceremony begins at 10 a.m. Saturday in the MCHS gymnasium, 900 Finley Lane. The public is welcome to attend the ceremony in the 3,000-person-capacity gym.

Principal Thom Schnellinger said the graduating seniors should focus on decorum.

"We're asking the students to be polite and listen well to the speakers," he said.

In terms of attire, Schnellinger said boys should wear dress shirts, dress pants or black jeans, and dress shoes or boots.

"They may wear boots, but they should be polished," he said.

No T-shirts, athletic shoes or sandals, Schnellinger said.

"No shower shoes and no Tevas," he added.

Girls, he said, should wear dress slacks or dresses. They should not wear flip-flops.

Regarding guests, Schnellinger asked that parents leave photographic duties to the pros.

In years past, parents have crowded the stage in hopes of getting the perfect shot. The practice has become a problem, he said.

"We're really trying to keep amateur photographers from impeding the ceremony," he said.

As such, the school has hired photographers to snap images of each student walking the stage. Those photos will be available for free next week.

Schnellinger also suggested guests take advantage of the free shuttle service to the ceremony.

Beginning at 8:30 a.m., buses will begin transporting guests to the school from the Kmart parking lot, 1198 W. Victory Way.

"There will be three shuttles rotating constantly," he said. "It's the best-kept secret in town. You can avoid the parking snarls here at the high school by taking the shuttle. You can be in and out really quick."

The school year began with the MCHS student council adopting the mantra "Every student will graduate." Schnellinger said the school came close to achieving that goal.

"We did well. If students aren't graduating — if they're not walking (Saturday) — many of them will find a way to finish either a little bit later in June, or they can look at some other situations," he said. "Kids accomplish this in a variety of different ways."

Schnellinger said the Class of 2011 will be missed.

"This has been a really good class," he said. "This has been an excellent class, academically. They pushed themselves in so many different ways.

I like them."
