Harry Tripp said little things will make or break the Moffat County High School girls varsity soccer team this season.

On Thursday, the Bulldogs fell short at Central Grand Junction, with missed passes and miscommunication on defense resulting in a 1-0 loss.

Despite another close loss Saturday at Delta High School, Harry, the Bulldogs head coach, said his team is making the right improvements.

More miscommunication between the defense and junior goalie Skylar Tripp resulted in a second half goal en route to a 2-0 victory for Delta.

“The (Delta) girls were aggressive and Skylar wrapped up a corner kick, but fell over a defender, lost the ball, and Delta kicked it in,” Harry said. “I think we played a lot better Saturday and if we would have played like that against Central Grand Junction, we would have won.”

The Bulldogs (0-2 overall, 0-1 Western Slope League) gave up a goal in the first half before the Panthers’ second half score.

Harry said the girls are still getting used to being outside and the temperature and early-seasoning conditioning took an affect on the players late in the second half.

Offensively, the Bulldogs only had eight shots on goal.

Harry said he plans to make some adjustments with both the front line and midfield to produce more scoring.

“We were just a half step off on our through balls and we just couldn’t catch up,” he said. “I am going to move (junior) Kelsie (Pomeroy) up front with (senior) Kelly (Ciesco) because I think that will give us more speed and the speed will get us more shots.”

On Saturday, Harry said sophomore Brenna Ciesco and senior Frida Meijer did a great job controlling the middle of the field.

“The girls did an awesome job at midfield, controlling the ball and getting things set up,” he said. “From left to right to through balls, (Brenna) and Frida were in control of all the plays and I think if we keep them in the middle, they can help with our new front line.”

Skylar had 23 saves Saturday, many of the shots easy grabs, Harry said.

The mental lapses, such as playing too close to one another, will work themselves out as the season progresses, he said.

“I think we cleaned a lot of the little things up in this game and even at halftime we critiqued and made adjustments,” Harry said. “We are starting to get to where we need to be for passes and can anticipate what will happen on the field.

“We have cleaned things up a lot, and we just need to keep practicing on some more of the little things and we will start to get things going.”

The Bulldogs travel Tuesday to Steamboat Springs, with the game set to begin at 6 p.m.

Tuesday’s contest will be the first of the season for Steamboat.

Harry said having the experience, even from losses, gives the Bulldogs an edge.

“We know the pace of the game and we are starting to get the conditioning,” he said. “We are starting to think alike when we are on the field and if we can escape with a 1-0 win, that would be awesome.”

Note: The MCHS girls junior varsity soccer team fell short on a last second Delta goal Saturday in a 4-3 loss to fall to 0-2 overall, 0-1 WSL.
