Despite falling, 56-45, on Saturday to Rifle, Moffat County High School girls varsity basketball coach Craig Mortensen said he saw positives.

“We’ll get to where we need to be,” he said. “We still have three weeks left in league play, and I think we’re getting better.”

The Bulldogs (7-10 overall, 5-3 in the Western Slope League) presented first-place Rifle (11-4, 8-0 in the WSL) with their closest game of the season.

After the first quarter, Moffat County held a slim 11-10 lead against the Bears.

Rifle would break out for 12 points in the second quarter, however, and left Moffat County looking at a 22-16 halftime deficit.

In a game that was closer than the score indicated, no lead was safe.

Consecutive 3-pointers by the Bulldogs’ Amanda Snyder and Melissa Camilletti tied the game at 22-22 in the opening minutes of the third quarter.

Led by Cordova, the Bears would edge out Moffat County, 39-29, at the end of the third.

“In the third quarter, we let it get away,” Mortensen said. “We made a couple of mistakes and missed some shots, and compounded with the turnovers, it got to us.”

For Rifle, Cortney Cordova was the only Bear to score in double digits, as she finished with a game-high 23 points.

Ciara Euler finished with 6 points and five rebounds, and Makayla Wilkins chipped in with 9 points.

The Bears shot 36 percent, making only two of 10 3-pointers.

The difference, however, was Rifle took 19 more shots than Moffat County.

The Bulldogs made 12 of 24 free throws, and Rifle hit 14 of its 17 tries at the line.

The Bulldogs had three players finish with double digits in points, as Amanda Snyder (12 points), Annie Sadvar (12 points, eight rebounds) and Lauren Roberts (11 points, six rebounds and three steals) all chipped in.

Overall, Moffat County shot 41 percent from the field, including three of 11 from beyond the 3-point line.

In the end, Rifle’s hot free throw shooting coupled with several Moffat County miscues sealed the Bears’ win.

“We did a lot of good things,” Mortensen said. “But we did enough of the negatives to allow them to pull away much better in the second half.”
