The Little Snake River Valley School girls varsity basketball team averaged more than 50 points per game during its 20-2 march through the regular season, winning the Three Trails Conference along the way.

But, as the Rattlers looked to win the 1A west regional championship Saturday, the team only managed to score 36 points.

However, it was still enough, as the Rattlers’ defense held Burlington to 24 points to win a defensive battle in route to a regional title and a trip to the 1A state tournament this week in Casper, Wyo.

“It was kind of a fun game,” head coach Jodi Stanley said. “If we know one thing after the game, it is that both teams played good defense.”

While the Rattlers usually get off 50-plus shots per game, Stanley said her team only took 35 shots in a game where the clock ran uninterrupted for much of the contest.

“We didn’t get a lot of opportunities, but we also didn’t force shots,” she said. “We only made 10 field goals and Burlington only made seven, but neither team shot poorly.

“We got to press them and we made them work hard to get the shot off.”

Coming into the game, Stanley said Burlington was probably expecting the Rattlers to run up and down the court.

Doing the opposite, Stanley said, allowed her team to get the victory.

“I think playing a slow game was exactly what we needed to do to win,” she said. “Burlington wanted us to run but every possession, we took time off the clock.”

Another reason for the low score, Stanley said, was turnovers.

Burlington committed 27 turnovers while the Rattlers had 18 of their own.

“I was pleased with the shot selection by my girls,” Stanley said. “The low scoring game suited us tonight.”

Senior Kelsey Kazmar led the Rattlers with 17 points and junior Caelee Criswell added 12.

Criswell broke her nose in LSRV’s game Friday and Stanley said her performance in the championship game was a gutsy one.

With the victory, the Rattlers will play Chugwater School at 6 p.m. Thursday in the first round of the state tournament at the Casper Events Center.

“The regional title let us know we can play with the big boys,” Stanley said. “We hope holding Burlington, who is often a top team, to 24 points will open some eyes around the state.

“We will have confidence heading into state, now.”
