LSRV boys win 3rd state title this school year

Heading into the final day of the 1A state track and field meet in Casper, Wyo., the Little Snake River Valley (Wyo.) School boys team held a slim lead over Dubois High School.

When Saturday rolled around, however, the Rattlers did what they have been doing all year — they stepped up in a pressure situation and took home the state title.

The track title completes the sweep for the LSRV boys this school year, as they also won the six-man football and the basketball state titles earlier in the year.

"It is incredible," head coach Mike Bates said. "I was thinking about it and I'm not sure if it is something in the water or if the stars had to align just right, but it is just an amazing feat."

The Rattlers, based in Baggs, Wyo., beat Dubois by almost 44 points.

Seven LSRV boys competed on all three state title teams — Sean Rietveld, Chance Englehart, Daniel Wille, Rex Stanley, Miles Englehart, Grayson Lee and Conner Lee.

"I'd say I'm not sure if this would ever happen at our school again, but we have a lot of returning athletes next year," Bates said. "This was the first time three state titles have been won in one year at our school and it is something unbelievable."

The boys team, however, wasn't the only Rattlers team to take home a state title Saturday.

The girls, who came close to winning volleyball and basketball state titles, finally earned their championship this school year, sharing the honor with Cokeville High School.

"It came down to the 4-by-400-meter relay for the girls," Bates said. "We needed to get third or higher and we took sixth at regionals. The girls took third, and for them to cut so much time shows they knew what they had to do for the state title."

LSRV and Cokeville both ended the three-day event with 114 points.

With the exception of the 1,600-meter run, Saturday's events consisted of sprinting events.

Bates said he had athletes step up on both teams in the sprints.

Morgan Wille was state champion in the 400-meter dash and the 200-meter dash, and took second in the 100-meter dash.

"When Morgan ran the 200, we were down by 10 points and she took first to bring us closer," Bates said. "Morgan had some big accomplishments on the weekend and helped in leading her team to a state title."

For the boys team, Daniel Wille and Manuel Quinteros placed well in the sprints.

Daniel took second in the 200-meter dash and fourth in the 100-meter dash and the 400-meter dash.

Quinteros finished second in the 400-meter dash and fourth in the 200-meter dash.

"Manuel has continued to get better as the season has progressed," Bates said. "I think Daniel was hoping for a little better finishes in some of his races, but he earned us points in everything he ran."

Lydia Skalberg also contributed to the girls team, taking third in the 1,600-meter run and fifth in the 300-meter hurdles.

Stanley won the 110-meter hurdles for the boys team, but was disqualified in the 300-meter hurdles.

At the end of his second season as track head coach, Bates said he is amazed at the athletes LSRV has.

"I think both teams winning state titles shows the athletic ability our athletes have," he said. "Not just in the middle, but how they finish. They go out to compete and as a coach, it feels amazing for both of these teams to finish like they did."
