Local artists look to start co-op gallery in Craig
March 12, 2013
Craig — Although still in the early and organizational phases, a group of Craig residents is working to establish an artists co-op and gallery in Craig.
An undertaking that started at the beginning of the year, the group met Tuesday to discuss ways to make a gallery in Craig possible.
There are currently no art galleries in Craig that strictly display artists' work. However, there are places around town such as Muaka Bakery that display the work of local artists.
Pam Foster facilitated the meeting and said establishing leadership will be key in moving forward with the venture. Accordingly, Patti Mosbey was elected as chairwoman, Janele Husband as treasurer and Jean Jones as secretary.
Foster said she could not yet reveal the location of the potential gallery, but said she would be able to in a couple of weeks.
Participants at Tuesday's meeting discussed dues to be a part of the gallery, including a year-long commitment and $30 a month for membership.
The group hopes to adopt bylaws and procedures from other successful rural galleries rather than write its own, as well as commission rates for artists.
Foster told those in attendance they would need to send their work to panelists for review, and that the gallery would accept only juried entries.
"If we don't do it this way you'll get into small-town politics and it's absolutely lethal," Foster said. "You may have some pieces rejected, but that's part of the art world."
The gallery will include all mediums, including pottery, photography, jewelry and paintings.
Those at the meeting discussed keeping the gallery space for local artists only.
The group plans to meet next week to discuss more options and to learn how to best photograph art to send to jurors. For more information, call Husband at 970-629-1843.
"We're starting to bridge this gap between rural and metro, which has taken forever," Foster said. "Art is a global thing. There are all sorts of possibilities out there. We just need to get you all connected."
