Sunday’s event also designed to raise helmet safety awareness

Staff report

Members of the Craig and Moffat County skateboarding community will hit the skatepark Sunday in memory of Shane Braselton, a late Craig resident and skateboarder.

The second annual Lid Jam, hosted by Carelli's Pizzeria and J&R Cyclery, is from 6 to 9 p.m. at the skatepark, Baker Drive and Ashley Road.

The event will honor Braselton, who died July 29, 2009, in Grand Junction from a skateboarding accident a day earlier in Craig. He was 20.

Organizer Kenny Stacy said he expects about 25 residents to attend.

The event, Stacy said, is a good way to not only remember Braselton, but also help make the community safer.

Braselton was not wearing a helmet at the time of his accident.

Through Lid Jam, Stacy said he hopes to raise awareness about the importance of helmet safety.

About 20 free helmets will be available to skaters who pledge to always wear it, Stacy said.

The event will be a competition with prizes for winners in competitive skating categories.

In 2009, about 15 residents attended a memorial jam a week after Braselton died, Stacy said.

The attendance and support at the event spurred Kenny to organize another event in hopes of drawing more skaters and educating them about safely skating.

Stacy said he hopes to host Lid Jam for as many years as possible.

He said he also hopes the community takes away a positive message from the event.

"I believe the feeling should be fun," he said. "It's just to celebrate his life really."

The event is open to the public, Stacy said.

"I feel everyone should attend for the community involvement, safety awareness and show support for Shane," he said.

So far, Stacy said he has received positive community feedback leading up to the event.

"I have seen a lot of kids around town that seem to be excited and looking forward to it," he said.

The event will also feature pizza from Carelli's, prizes donated from J&R Cyclery, and helmets from Carelli's and the city of Craig.
