“It's amazing we got to where we did with the economy the way it is and everything just not as strong. The first day was very disappointing and the second day exceeded all expectations. It was probably the biggest (single) day we've ever had.”

Despite a slow economy Craig and Moffat County residents opened up their wallets this week to make this year’s KRAI/55 Country Holiday Drive the second best in its history.

“It’s amazing we got to where we did with the economy the way it is and everything just not as strong,” said KRAI/55 Country owner Frank Hanel. “The first day was very disappointing and the second day exceeded all expectations. It was probably the biggest (single) day we’ve ever had.”

More than $25,470 was raised during the two-day event, in addition to donations of more than 4,580 pounds of food and 1,700 toys, Hanel said.

The Holiday Drive was coordinated with the Moffat County United Way, providing cash donors the opportunity to decide which organizations they wanted to benefit.

Advocates Crisis Support Services received $4,260, Christmas for Seniors received $4,388, Interfaith Food Bank received $7,421 and Christmas for Kids received $8,500 from 2012 Holiday Drive donors.

The remaining $900 will be contributed to a United Way general fund, which is dispersed among its partner organizations.

“The community realized there was a need, and they stepped up and exceeded what we’ve done every year except for one,” Hanel said. “The business community, citizens, everybody was there. Certainly the need was incredibly great this year, so we were incredibly pleased when it was all done.”
