Craig Rural Fire Protection District Board of Directors appointed KC Hume as fire chief in December.
Hume has been acting as interim fire chief since former Fire Chief Bill Johnston announced his effective-immediately retirement in October.
Hume said he is excited to take on the position.
"I'm both humbled and extremely honored to have the opportunity to lead this phenomenal group of men and women," he said
It didn't take the Craig Rural Fire Protection District Board of Directors much time to decide who would be the right person for the job.
"This really was an easy choice," Fire Board Member John Forgay said. "It really wasn't a difficult decision for the Fire Board to make."
It required brief deliberation only because the Fire Board wasn't sure Hume would want the added responsibility, President of the Fire Board Byron Willems said.
Hume "is by far the most qualified. We spoke to him as soon as (Johnston) retired," Willems said.
Hume is the lieutenant with the Moffat County Sheriff's Office, deputy coroner and on the Moffat County School Board.
Hume "has so many hats and so many irons in the fire," Forgay said.
The Fire Board "allowed him time to think how (fire chief) would fit in his overall agenda. We're certainly glad that he chose to go ahead and move into the position," Forgay said.
"It was clear that he was the right man."
Hume said he isn't daunted by the new position.
"It's about balancing: balancing your responsibilities not only in the professional arena but the personal," he said.
Hume is confident he can work that balance.
"I look to continue the same high level of service and response that Craig Fire/Rescue is known for," he said.
Hume said he is proud to have worked up to this position. He started with the fire department 15 years ago as a rookie.
"Everyone starts at the same point. You start as a rookie. That's where I started my career," he said.
