Kay Borvansky: Giving to children in need
Horizons raising money for special needs through campaign
December 26, 2009
Horizons would like to publicly thank Nicole Inglis, the Craig Daily Press staff reporter who honored our request to share the story of little Tristan Gorley. The story appeared in the Dec. 19 Saturday Morning Press.
Like many children born prematurely, Tristan has experienced some delays in his development. He has been receiving therapy from the specially trained therapists of Horizons Early Intervention Program.
Early Intervention is offered to little ones 3 years old and younger at no cost to the family.
Children who have been identified as having a delay or disability can benefit the most when therapy is available early in life. Studies have found that for every $1 spent early in development, as much as $7 is saved in needed services later in a child's life.
Families with a loved one who has special needs can also access assistance through our Family Support Program.
These expenses are not covered by any other source and are mostly of a medical nature. Funding for these programs comes from the state, Division for Developmental Disabilities and when possible, private insurance.

State funding does not cover the cost of needed services to every eligible child. Horizons is unwilling to have a waiting list because early intervention is so important.
Every year at Christmas time, Horizons hosts a fundraiser known as the Little Points of Light campaign.
The money we raise is used to supplement our Early Intervention and Family Support Programs.
People who wish to do something special for children can contribute to this campaign to ensure that children can benefit not just this Christmas, but for the rest of their lives.
Tristan and his mother, Jessica, have been blessed with the love and generosity of the Browning family who have opened their home and their hearts to provide them with a loving and stable home.
The generosity of Horizons Little Points of Light contributors throughout the years has enabled us to help many children like Tristan.
When you think of giving a child a gift, why not consider one that will give those who need it, the gift of a brighter future?
