Danny Griffith has a vision for the kind of atmosphere he wants in his business — one where people can pull up a stool or chair, settle in and stay for a while.

Griffith’s JW Snack’s Bar & Grill was voted Best Bar and Best Outdoor Dining, among other wins and numerous rankings in second and third place, a fact he attributes to the laidback, welcoming nature of the restaurant’s gulf coast theme.

It’s not uncommon to see people relax at the bar at JW Snack’s for long stretches, just conversing with friends while enjoying drinks. The same goes for the patio section, which, once the weather warms up, is a regular hot spot for live entertainment.

The tropical décor also adds to the feeling.

“I’ve had people tell me when they’re out here it feels like they’re not in Craig, it’s like they’re on vacation,” Griffith said.

The crowds are quick to come to the restaurant for other purposes, too, explaining the win for Best Wings and Best Place to Watch the Game. Whatever season it is, football, basketball, baseball or another, it isn’t hard to plop down in front of a screen to get your sports fix.

“We get some obscure requests, sometimes,” Griffith said. “I don’t watch lacrosse, but I’ve had people ask for it, and I tell them, ‘we can find that for you.’”

Though customers enter the doors to unwind, Griffith asks his employees to give 110 percent while on the job while still providing a fun, friendly place to be.

As the owner of the eatery and watering hole since it opened in late 2005, he said he couldn’t do it without the people in the kitchen and those bussing and waiting on tables.

“My staff is where our success comes from,” he said. “We set the bar high, and then they take it from there. If you shoot for perfect, you’ll come darn close.”
