Jury selected for Craig woman’s trial

During the first day of proceedings Monday, a 12-person jury and one alternate were selected to serve in the trial of Craig woman Tashua Merwin.

Merwin is charged with attempting to influence a public servant, a Class 4 felony.

The jury was selected from a pool of about 100 residents.

According to court records, Merwin allegedly lied to police officials about her alleged relationship with Ken Johnson, a former Craig Police Department detective and member of the All Crimes Enforcement Team task force.

Merwin pleaded not guilty to the charge Feb. 17.

Judge Shelley Hill adjourned court about 5:30 p.m. Monday after swearing in the jurors.

Steamboat Springs attorney Ron Smith is representing Merwin.

Jon Pfeifer, a Moffat County deputy district attorney, is the lead prosecutor and is receiving assistance from Rusty Prindle, a deputy district attorney for the DA’s office in Steamboat Springs.

Prindle handled jury selection duties for the prosecution Monday, but said Pfeifer would be presenting the majority of the prosecution’s case.

The trial will resume at 8:30 a.m. today with further instructions for the jury and opening statements from the prosecution and defense.

Pfeifer said the defense and prosecution would then begin presentation of the evidence in the case.

Pfeifer said he plans to call five witnesses to the stand, but may call additional witnesses as part of rebuttal, if necessary.

The trial is expected to last through Thursday.
