Jeff and Larri Winslow: Corrections to Winslow story
January 7, 2014
To the editor:
First, I would like to thank the Craig Daily Press for naming our son, Benjamin Winslow, as your Hometown Hero this week.
We are extremely proud of him not only for his service to our country, but for being an all-around good man. Ben was reluctant to be interviewed for this article because he doesn't like any attention being drawn to him for simply doing the right thing, but he agreed because he wants people to know what a positive experience being part of the military is.
For this reason, I would like to clarify a few things in the article that weren't quite accurate.
After Navy Boot Camp in Great Lakes, Ill., he went to A School in Pensacola, Fla. Ben is an Aviation Machinist's Mate attached to VFA-87. He did not join the Squadron. He achieved the rank of E4, Petty Officer Third Class, in less than one year, which is a huge accomplishment as well as earning his "wings" for Enlisted Air Warfare Specialist.
Ben received the honor of Plane Captain of the month twice in 2013 and was awarded Plane Captain of the Year for 2013 for exemplary performance, professional conduct and positive attitude. He has also received two Navy Achievement Medals.
While he is on deployment, his wife, Carli, will return to Craig to pursue her photography career and also help in the family business. She did attend the Art Institute in Virginia Beach, Va.
Again, thank you for recognizing Ben as your Hometown Hero. We just wanted to make sure his service and story is accurately portrayed.
