Jane Yazzie: Haiti group needs help

To the editor:

Moffat County residents may be interested in informing themselves of and making a contribution to the Colorado Haiti Project, which the Denver Post wrote about in its March 22 edition.

The CHP and its history are more fully covered at the Web site, http://www.coloradohaitiproject.org.

The Post reported that CHP, a nonprofit organization working in Haiti since 1996 at the latest, recognizes the current greater need for its in-place projects. It can thus make good use of funding support for its programs in Petit Trou de Nippes, a rural community of 19 villages located 18 miles west of Port-Au-Prince, the damaged Haitian capital.

The population of all rural communities has swelled from earthquake refugees leaving the capital.

The CHP projects are the following:

• A kindergarten through sixth grade school, St. Paul's. Since 2008, additional secondary school grades through grade 12 have been added and supported by CHP, not only in programs — hot lunch, faculty and school nurse — but also in student scholarships covering tuition, books and uniforms.

• A community health initiative that trains about 34 local women in health and hygiene and then trains each of them to train two others; a program also hoping to expand into maternal and child health care.

• A student health access and reproductive education program for adolescents.

• A Women's Vocational Center with training in tailoring, cooking/catering and business/budgeting; a center also chosen by FONKAZE as a local site for a branch of its world-known micro-loan program for starting new businesses, primarily used by women.

• A clean water project, CHP's largest capital project, to dig wells, build a supply system to Petit's 19 villages and supply in-home filters throughout the villages to households that will be trained in their use.

• A series of new programs in home building, agronomy and agro-forestry, for food-producing trees.

The CHP address is: Colorado Haiti Project, 841 Front St., Suite 100, Louisville, CO. 80027. The phone number is 303-938-5021.

When contacted March 31, its officer said it needs, and would be grateful for, any donations. It is reliant upon individual, foundation, church and community organization donations.
