Injuries catch up to Bulldog wrestlers

Craig Daily Press Staff Report

Wrestling Friday and Saturday at the Bill Thoman, Jr., Memorial Wrestling TournĀament in Green River, Wyo., Moffat County High School coach Roman Gutierrez knew his team would be shorthanded.

The team was without Nathan Tomlin (forearm), Cody Nelson (broken finger), Garrett Stewart (elbow) and Matt Linsacum (shoulder).

Those injuries finally caught up to Moffat County.

"We won one dual against Rifle, out of our seven," Gutierrez said. "We were down four weights, and our fill-ins didn't wrestle really well."

The team was without a wrestler in the 130-, 135- and 215-pound classes.

"Injuries have caught up to us," Gutierrez said. "Hopefully, we'll get a few of those kids back before we have to wrestle in Meeker."

The team has this weekend off. The next scheduled meet is Jan. 28 in Meeker.

Although he was unsure of exact timetables for returns, Gutierrez said most of the wrestlers should be ready to compete at the Feb. 6 league meet in Rifle.

"Hopefully, we'll have them all back when we wrestle league duals," Gutierrez said.

For the Bulldogs, Charlie Griffiths (6-2 record, six pins), Scott Mann (5-2, four), and Cody Adams (6-1, five) all had a successful weekend.

But wrestling in a dual meet without the likes of Tomlin, Nelson and Stewart hurt the team, Gutierrez said.

"We just haven't performed very well in dual meets from a team standpoint," he said. "In an individual tournament, I think we still would have performed very well. Until we get those other guys back, it will be a little tough for us."

At the Green River tournament, Moffat County was pitted against tough teams from Wyoming and Colorado.

"There were 12 teams," Gutierrez said. "And they were all good teams."

Despite being down several strong wrestlers, Gutierrez said he enjoys having his team compete against quality programs.

"It was good to see those really good kids," he said. "Those are the kinds of kids that you want to see every week.

"Win or lose, those are the kinds of matches you can expect to see at regionals or the state meet."

With the break, the team will not only look to get healthy, but also get better.

"I think right now we'll be concentrating on conditioning," Gutierrez said. "We always want their technique to get better, but our focus for the next two weeks will be conditioning."

There are a few things the Bulldogs need to focus on technique-wise, Gutierrez said.

"We just have to get on some of our cradles," he said. "We're not scoring where we need to be, and we want to get that cleared up before we get to regionals and state."
