— After a first half that saw the Battle Mountain Huskies score three goals against the Moffat County High School girls varsity soccer team, coach Harry Tripp said the team got a rare treat.

A break.

The game was delayed 15 minutes because of a lightning storm, and Tripp said he used the time to amp his team up.

“We had a lightning delay for about 15 minutes,” he said. “But it was good because it was like a timeout. I took advantage, to show them what was going wrong, and write up some plays.”

After the break, the Bulldogs (2-7 overall, 1-6 in the Western Slope League) held the Huskies (9-2 overall, 8-2 in the WSL) scoreless, but were unable to score and fell, 3-0.

But the Bulldogs’ recent trend of strong second half play has impressed Tripp.

“We didn’t let them score again,” he said. “They are starting to become a second-half team, and they are listening to what I am telling them.”

The junior varsity team was tied with Battle Mountain, 2-2, at halftime behind goals from Karen Bolton and Kylee Gorringe.

But the team couldn’t hold on and Battle Mountain’s JV prevailed, 4-2.

Moffat County has been able to challenge Battle Mountain, the No. 2 team in the WSL behind Palisade, twice this season.

In the March 30 meeting between the two teams, Battle Mountain ultimately won in the second overtime.

“Some of the girls were saying that last year, (Battle Mountain) beat them by seven or eight to nothing,” Tripp said. “So, I think we are making progress.”

Moffat County will play Tuesday in Rifle against the Bears (0-10-1 overall, 0-6-1 in the WSL).
