Honor Flight seeking WWII veterans for final flight

Ed Wilkinson

The Western Slope Honor Flight is continuing to actively search for World War II veterans interested in going on the final flight of the program, scheduled for Sept. 21 and 22 to Washington, D.C.

Seats are still available for veterans from the Western Slope and Eastern Utah interested in visiting the memorials built and dedicated in their honor.

The Honor Flight Board is asking the community to help in the search to escort these American heroes to their place of honor.

The application for WWII veterans can be accessed at http://www.westernslopehonorflight.com, or by calling Kris Baugh at 970-434-2916.

Applications are to be mailed to Western Slope Honor Flight, P.O. Box 3950, Grand Junction, CO  81502. The trip is free for veterans.

The upcoming trip will be the Honor Flight's final journey.

Old and worn flags to be retired Aug. 27

Due to a very busy schedule, there has not been a flag-burning ceremony performed to retire old and worn flags this summer.

However, one is now set for 7 a.m. Aug. 27 at the VFW post, 419 E. Victory Way.

If anyone has a flag that needs to be burned, please either attend the ceremony with your flag, or give it to me, or a representative of the VFW or American Legion.

Dues needed for VFW, Legion members

If you are in arrears on dues to the VFW or American Legion, please send your payment. Remember, dues are used to pay for programs for veterans.

American Legion officers are: commander Jake Garcia, senior vice commander Bill White, chaplain Randy Kline, adjutant Dave Walters, sergeant-at-arms Howdy Davis, historian Al Shepard, financial officer Brian Baxter, and I'm the junior vice commander.

Van funds coming

We are still waiting on money for the new veterans van.

Hopefully this will come in a couple of weeks, but government sometimes moves slowly.

But, the longer we wait, the more we will appreciate it.
