Precautions advised during tick season

Northwest Colorado Health advises taking precautions against ticks and tick-borne diseases during spring and summer months. Tick bites in Colorado can result in Colorado Tick Fever, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Tick-borne Relapsing Fever. Ticks should be removed from skin as soon as possible. If you remove a tick from a person or a pet, wash your hands immediately. If you become ill after a tick bite or exposure to ticks, seek prompt medical attention. Ticks are commonly found in wooded or brushy areas with tall grass. They may also inhabit rustic mountain cabins where chipmunks and other rodents may have visited. Wear protective clothing – long-sleeved shirts and long pants – and do thorough tick checks after being in areas where ticks may be present.

For information on how to safely remove a tick that has settled into the skin, go to http://www.cdc.gov/ticks.

Office of Women’s Health raises awareness of women veterans

There are over 1.6 million women veterans in the United States.

Many feel invisible and unsupported by traditional veterans’ services believes Dr. Kate Hendricks Thomas, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

“The word veteran calls to mind the image of a man, especially when you’re talking about a combat veteran… Women veterans share many of the exact same concerns of our male colleagues; yet we also face unique issues,” Thomas wrote in a blog for the Office of Women’s Health.

She believes that communities can help take care of women veterans.

“See us. Hire us. Make space in veterans’ organizations, on your campuses, in your VA hospital. Recognize our experiences and unique needs and care enough about them to have us at the table when you’re planning your next veteran outreach project,” Thomas wrote.

Hepatitis A on the rise in Colorado

There has been an increase in hepatitis A cases in Colorado, and the state is recommending some adults at higher risk for the illness be vaccinated. Hepatitis A is a liver infection. Typically a person gets the virus by ingesting food or drinks contaminated with the virus. It also can be spread through sexual contact. The vaccine is routinely recommended for children, but most adults have not been vaccinated. Two doses of the vaccine, given six months apart, are recommended for:

  • All children at age one.
  • Men who have sexual contact with men or people who live with or have sexual contact with someone who has hepatitis A.
  • People who use injection and non-injection illegal drugs.
  • People with chronic liver diseases, such as cirrhosis, hepatitis B or hepatitis C.
  • People who are homeless.
  • People who are traveling to countries with higher rates of hepatitis A, including Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America.
  • Family members or caregivers of a recent adoptee from countries where the virus is common.
  • People who are treated with blood clotting-factor concentrates.

For more information about hepatitis A, go to cdc.gov/hepatitis. For questions about the vaccine or to make an appointment for immunization, call Northwest Colorado Health at 970-824-8233.
