— Head-on crash on US 40 leaves 1 person critical

A head-on crash on U.S. Highway 40 about one mile west of Hayden closed the highway for more than an hour and sent at least one person to the hospital with critical injuries Wednesday afternoon.

Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Scott Elliott said the crash occurred at about 1 p.m. A Chevrolet Trailblazer was driving east on U.S. 40 and struck a Ford F350 pickup when the Trailblazer tried to pass a semitrailer.

“Last I heard, the driver of the Trailblazer was in critical condition,” Elliott said early Wednesday evening.

Elliott did not know the age, sex or residency of the driver. The driver of the Ford F350 truck and semi sustained minor injuries in the wreck, Elliott said.
