Hayden gym expands offerings in 2015

— A gym in Hayden has expanded its offerings for those wanting to make health a focus in 2015.

Last February, Ryan Lee and Alexis Rauso opened H Town Underground after purchasing the historic Hayden Masonic Temple at 299 W. Jefferson Ave.

“It’s been pretty good,” Lee said. “This summer was jamming. We had a lot of new faces.”

When the gym first opened, Lee and Rauso taught three classes on the main floor of the building. Throughout the past year, the couple has filled the bottom level with a variety of machines and free weights so it can offer an open gym to members.

“I had more and more people coming in,” Lee said. “I started just piecing things together so they would have a place to work out.”

On Tuesday night, Hayden residents Dylan Richardson and Aaron Haskins were lifting heavy.

“It’s awesome,” Haskins said. “We’ve never had any place to work out without driving to Steamboat and Craig. It’s really nice having something here.”

The latest addition to the gym was a $750 investment and is called a reverse hyperextension machine.

“It teaches you to engage your core before moving,” Rauso said.

Lee said he did not think there was a similar machine in the Yampa Valley. It is used to both stretch and strengthen the lower back and will help people rehab from injuries.

“So many people have lower back issues,” Lee said.

While Lee demonstrated the machine, Rauso got a group of four women warmed up for a high-intensity interval training class. Thor, the gym dog, observed from his dog bed.

“I like it,” said Elsie Richardson, who has been a H Town Underground member since the gym opened. “It gets you motivated. It’s always different.”

In addition to the interval training class, Lee teaches a one-hour moderate- to high-intensity class called The Underground. FunFit is a low- to medium-intensity version of The Undergound. The Aging Women’s Fitness class is low impact and low intensity. A stretch class includes static and dynamic stretching and yoga.
