Hayden Food Bank expands hours

LIFT-UP makes decision based on increasing need for services

Jack Weinstein

— The LIFT-UP of Routt County food bank in Hayden has extended its hours to help meet the increasing need for its services.

The food bank now is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Mondays and from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesdays. Last year, the Food Bank moved from the Solandt Memorial Hospital basement to 118 Walnut St., just south of Jefferson Avenue in downtown Hayden.

The food bank previously was open only Wednesdays.

"Originally, when we were at the other location, we were open Monday morning and Wednesday afternoons," said Pam Graham, food bank manager for LIFT-UP. "Because of staffing, we couldn't do that. Now at the new location, we have the staffing to offer the additional time."

Graham said some of Hayden Food Bank's clients asked for the additional day.

To qualify to receive assistance, Graham said LIFT-UP has guidelines that stipulate county residents live at less than 200 percent of the federal poverty line — an income of about $20,000 per year for a single person and $40,000 per year for a family of four.

She said the need is increasing.

"The winter season, from October to March, this past season, was more than we've ever seen before, Graham said.

She said the Hayden Food Bank serves about 60 families.

Graham said in addition to being able to provide staffing for the additional day, the downtown location is larger and allows LIFT-UP to stock more food. She also said the facility is more accessible.

Julie Jordan, assistant director of LIFT-UP, said the expanded hours would help the food bank meet the client need in Hayden.

Because the Hayden Food Bank was open only one day a week, residents sometimes had to drive to Steamboat for assistance. In addition to providing food, the Hayden Food Bank is an emergency assistance facility that provides medical or prescription assistance, electric and natural gas assistance, and other housing needs.

"We want to make sure, because it's LIFT-UP of Routt County, that we provide facilities in all regions of our county," Jordan said.

The Steamboat Springs Food Bank, located at 2125 Curve Court, is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. The South Routt Food Bank, located in the Oak Creek Community Center, 1000 Grant Ave., is open from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday and Thursday.
