H. Neal Glanville: Who’s it hurting attitude

It’s strange how the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is starting a new campaign against smokers, complete with pictures of various body parts rotting away, right on the cigarette package.

While this may seem a credible use of taxpayer money, one could argue its effects will be noticed more by adults than the beginning smoker.

This is certainly not because the younger smoker lacks intelligence of the reported diseases caused by smoking nor the obvious peer pressure that comes along for the ride.

As a smoker, I believe it’s a combination of all these things, plus a new added feature.

I’m talking about synthetic cannabinoids, a so-called designer drug that’s had its molecular level altered just enough to avoid detection while at times remaining 100 times more potent than marijuana.

Called “Spice,” and also k2 and numerous other names, it is sold as herbal incense and labeled as “not for human consumption.” The kids buying this stuff are laughing all the way to the car before they fire one up, knowing they can pass most tests for this molecular junk.

Those of us who smoke cigarettes or chew do so with eyes wide open to the reasons for a painful death.

Kids loading up their bongs or twisting one up have no clue as to the long- or short-term effects.

Realizing the sellers of this gunk will whimper about free enterprise each time they’re caught, they’ll only laugh to the bank each time a new one is invented.

Perhaps local pressure by law enforcement and the 14th Judicial District Attorney’s Office will ease the Craig problem and act as a catalyst for other small towns.

But, then again, the “who’s it hurting” attitude will probably prevail.

Now for something completely different

I was impaled upon the stake of “you must listen and pay attention” during the president’s ramblings about troop withdrawal in Afghanistan.

It reminded me of another president pulling troops out of Vietnam only to have them rotate to another country for 90 days and then return to their battle stations.

Although both were re-election moves, one president left office and the other is still trying to tie the knots of our economy together.

Hey, you be careful out there, and stay to the light.
