The Denver Post

Two Grand Junction men are facing federal charges in connection with bank robberies in Rifle, Montrose and Cedaredge earlier this summer.

Troy A. Ashley, 24, and Brandon D. Smith, 33, were arrested by Montrose police on suspicion of robbery on Aug. 1 and have been in jail in Montrose County since then, records show.

They allegedly used pellet guns in each of the robberies, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Denver said today.

They were indicted by a federal grand jury in Denver late Wednesday on three counts of armed bank robbery.

The pair is accused of robbing the American National Bank in Rifle on May 27, the Alpine Bank in Montrose on June 24, and the Surface Creek Bank in Cedaredge on July 29.

If convicted, they face up to 25 years in federal prison and fines of up to $250,000, as well as restitution, for each robbery.
