Gibson: An attitude of gratitude

The Rev. Karen Gibson, Co-pastor of Friendship United Methodist Church

I have been looking forward to writing an article for the religion page in the Craig Daily Press for quite a few weeks now.

The last time it was my turn, I sort of dropped off the face of the earth because I was helping with Vacation Bible School done as a joint effort at St. Michael Catholic Church, along with St. Mark’s Episcopal, Congregational and Friendship United Methodist Church. We had a very good week.

Being able to work together is such a special privilege. During that week, my father-in-law also was admitted to the hospital and received treatment for an unexpected illness. My husband and I appreciated the care and attention that was paid to my father-in-law, Ray.

I have pondered for a long time what would I write about God the next time it is my turn to write an article for the paper. So I will share just where my time has been invested lately and where I have experienced God at work in my life.

I saw God the night, Aug. 13, that SHARE Craig had its closing barbecue to celebrate 12 years of serving the community and surrounding areas with low-cost food. The volunteers who had been loyal ‘til the end came, celebrated and shared their memories.

I see God on Monday mornings when I help deliver bread for St. Michael’s Kitchen. I know that this bread will be used to feed others on Tuesday at lunch to not to worry about where they will get their next meal.

I saw God in all the small business owners who donated items for the silent auction for the Love INC (In the Name of Christ) Pig Roast on Sept. 26. I saw God in all the faces of those who came to support Love INC that day and for all the volunteers who helped serve and donate.

I see God when small business owners help me out, as when my old Geo Prizm car needs a little bit of work done on it, and I get treated just like the person who has a great big SUV or truck.

I saw God when I got treated the same at the office supply store when I was buying a 21-cent folder instead of a new camera or a television.

I saw God at work in the face of all the people walking or riding in the Homecoming parade last Friday afternoon.

I see God when anyone goes out of their way to greet me or smiles or provides a service for me.

St. Paul writing to the church at Ephesus talks about the size of love, and then goes on to say in Ephesians 3: 20NRSV, “Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine.”

This is a reminder for me of how God is present in amazing ways. By now you must have gathered that I believe Craig is a pretty special place to live. I live out of an attitude of gratitude for what God has done in my life, knowing all good things come from God, and good things for me have come from living here in Craig.

May God bless you in all your comings and goings. I hope to see your smiling face soon.
