Frank Moe: Vote ‘yes’ on 5A

To the editor:

Please join me in voting “yes” for 5A, Moffat County Local Marketing District.

My personal opinion as a private citizen and local co-owner of the Best Western PLUS Deer Park Inn and Suites with my wife Kerry, is that now is the time to address our local economic challenges!

We can no longer afford to waste any more time discussing the past.

We must take our economic future as a community, into our own hands and craft the outcomes we all desire.

The critical steps have been set into motion now. With the recently announced Economic Development Administration $100,000 grant being approved, our community will have a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) for all of Moffat County. The CEDS implementable strategy will finally turn words into action.

Tangible projects, initiatives and targeted businesses and industries, etc. will be identified. Timelines, responsibilities and goals will be applied so the community will be able to see and measure the accomplishments of this grant.

This CEDS is going to require people and dollar resources to achieve the short and long term objectives. This is where 5A, the Moffat County LMD passage is essential to the overall economic success of our county. The $275,000 projected annual revenues generated from an additional 4 percent lodging tax assessed to only hotel guests staying in lodging establishments in Moffat County, for the next 10 years until the sunset of the tax. This tax can only be used for economic development, diversification, and tourism promotion.

Another key component to our economic success is happening Nov. 4. A White House representative, the U.S. Economic Development Administration, the U.S. Department of Interior, the Colorado Workforce Development, the Colorado Department of Local Affairs, and the Colorado Office of Economic Development will be holding an “Economic Roundtable” meeting here in Craig. Part of the discussion will revolve around our CEDS, and “connecting” us with the people and dollar resources and grants that we will need for the capital projects identified.

Never before in the 28 years that I have lived here in Moffat County has the implementable strategy, the people, and the resources necessary to truly turn our economy around and keep it on a path of growth and prosperity been within our grasp. A strong economy will mean a stable and vibrant community for us all.

Let us all do what it takes to strengthen our future. Let us finally make it a reality. 5A will not tax the local citizenry, it will only tax those that stay at any of Moffat County’s lodging establishments.

Please join me in voting “yes” for 5A, Moffat County Local Marketing District.

Thank you.

Frank Moe
