Flat second-half leads to blowout loss for MCHS boys

Scott Schlaufman

It was a tale of two halves Friday night during the Moffat County High School boys varsity basketball team's game against Delta.

Using a balanced offense, MCHS was able to keep pace with Delta, and the home team trailed the Panthers by just two at the end of the first quarter.

The Bulldogs stuck around in the second, too, trailing by just six at halftime.

Things went wrong after the break, however, and MCHS (2-17, 1-8 in WSL) stumbled to a 64-35 home loss.

Delta was able to step up defensively in the second half, creating numerous fast break opportunities, and outscoring the Bulldogs 32-9.

"They had some good quickness, " MCHS coach David Bradshaw said. "They have some good shooters out there."

Among the shooters Delta (9-11, 4-6 in WSL) had was Jake Ames, who finished the game with 25 points. Nine of them came on 3-pointers in the second quarter.

In the third quarter, he took advantage of the Panthers' steals and was able to put in lay-up after lay-up. He scored 12 of the team's 16 points in the quarter.

In that quarter, the Bulldogs scored only seven points, hitting three shots and a free throw.

In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs' only points came on a shot from Colby Haddan, who finished with six for the game.

Bradshaw attributed part of the second-half struggles to problems with defensive transition and not being able to control tempo.

"We did a better job in the first half controlling the tempo," he said. "I thought we got good early movement in the first half. The second half we didn't get the early movement offensively."

The lack of movement, he said, forced the team to take long, contested shots.

"I thought we forced some outside shots and settled for a lot of threes, instead of just attacking them inside," Bradshaw said.

Zach and Angelo Raftopoulos led the Bulldogs with 10 points each.

Zach's points all came in the first half.

Angelo had six in the first half and scored four more in the third quarter before he fouled out two minutes into the fourth quarter.

It was the Bulldogs sixth straight loss.
