Fitness Tip: Choose the right carbs

Carbohydrates are an essential part of your diet and fitness. It is important to choose carbohydrates that have a low glycemic index. The glycemic index reveals how much a food may raise your blood sugar level. While both high and low glycemic foods can be part of a healthy diet or weight loss program, know that high glycemic foods come with certain health risks. High glycemic foods have been linked to a higher BMI, diabetes, obesity and heart disease.

Examples of high glycemic foods include: pasta, white bread, baked goods, chips and cookies, rice and low-fiber cereals. Examples of low glycemic foods include: many fruits and vegetables, legumes and whole grains. Choose the right kind of carbs to help you achieve your fitness goals quicker.
