Faith Column: Believe in Jesus and his gifts

Vicki Van Couvering/For the Saturday Morning Press

I was shopping for Christmas cards the other day and saw a lot of "Happy Holidays" and "Season's Greetings" cards. The inside of one card said something like, "May the spirit of Christmas be yours throughout the New Year." Made me ask — What is the spirit of Christmas? "Shop til you drop?"

"Give to everyone who gives to you?"

"Eat, drink and be merry?"

"Get 2 percent cash back on all purchases?"

I took a look at the Bible story I memorized as a child (Luke chapter 2)… Christmas pageant every Christmas Eve. Gave me a stomach ache every Christmas Eve… what if I didn't remember my lines!!!

Here's what I saw:

Recommended Stories For You

• Jesus was born in a town full of travelers come to register for a census — no room for him anywhere but an animal feeding trough; no one knew or cared that another baby was born… except maybe the tax collectors

• But Jesus 'Father (the true and living God of the bible) cared and wanted people to know — so He sent angels to tell shepherds watching their sheep in the fields. First only one angel "suddenly stood before them." Their response? Terror!

• The angel told them not to be afraid because, "I bring you good news of a great joy which is for all the people for today…a savior has been born for you who is Christ the Lord." The angel told them where they would find this Savior — in a manger wrapped in cloths.

• As if that wasn't enough, suddenly a multitude of angels showed up praising God and declaring peace on earth among those with whom God is pleased.

• The shepherds were so excited they took off immediately to go see the "this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us." They found Mary, Joseph and the baby just as the angels told them.

• But they couldn't keep the news to themselves —everyone they told "wondered at the things the shepherds had told them."

Have you taken time to wonder about the wonder of Christmas? God sent His son, Jesus, to be a human being — just like you and me. So people who lived in his day — and ours — could know Jesus, and by knowing Jesus, they would know the Father who sent him. (John 14:9-11). Jesus lived a life that perfectly pleased his father… and we get credited for it all when we believe Jesus is who he and the bible say he is: God's son sent to give eternal life (that means a forever loving relationship with the One who created everything, including you!) to everyone who believes (John 3:16).

If you haven't taken time to wonder (be astonished at or admire) about the wonder (something that is surprising or hard to believe) of Christmas, maybe now is a good time to give it a try. Jesus promised that he will accept whoever comes to him (John 6:35-40).

If you don't have a bible (or need one that is easier to understand), come to the Pregnancy & Family Center (25 W. Victory Way) and we will give you one — and talk with you more about the living God of the bible and his son, Jesus, if you'd like.
