Earth Dome coming to Craig Elementary Schools, Boys & Girls Club
October 12, 2012
If you go …
The Earth Dome will be available to view in an informal setting at from 5-7 p.m. Monday at the Boys & Girls Club of Craig, 1324 E. U.S. Highway 40.
Craig Elementary students will have an opportunity to see what the earth looks like from space, up close and personal.
Friends of Moffat County Education has arranged for the Earth Dome to come to Craig, visiting all elementary schools and the Boys and Girls Club in the course of a week.
Standing 19 feet tall and 22 feet wide, the large inflatable balloon displays the earth's surface using photographs taken from satellites on cloud free days.
Students will experience the Earth Dome in half hour assemblies, with presentations both outside and inside the balloon.
Parents will have the opportunity to see the Earth Dome and get an idea of what their child will be learning during an open house from 5 – 7 p.m. Monday at the Boys & Girls Club of Craig, 1324 E. U.S. Highway 40.
"Interested parents can come and see with their own eyes, nothing formal, just a chance for parents to be engaged in children's academia," said Chris Jones of Friends of Moffat County Education. "I encourage any parents that are curious to stop by."
Jones said the curriculum taught in the assembly is tailored to match the grade level.
"I'm excited as a parent because the curriculum taught is adjusted for age group," Jones said. "I'm just excited and hoping that having such a visual model in front of them will help them understand some things about how the earth works."
Some concepts students will learn about are continents, time zones, latitude and longitude.
Jones said teachers and administrators at each elementary school have been adjusting curriculum to coincide with topics they might learn from the earth dome.
"They're preparing in the classroom so it's relevant," Jones said.
"We started in January and have been fundraising throughout the year."
Along with the fundraising and a grant from the Yampa Valley Community Foundation, the group was able to bring the Earth Dome to Craig.
The Earth Dome will be available for two sessions for children who attend the Boys & Girls Club at 1 p.m. on Monday, along with sessions for students in home school and private school, prior to the open house for parents.
"If we have one student that is interested in that it shows them another part of science and hopefully gets them interested and learning about possible careers," Jones said.
