Downed power line causes outages in Craig, Maybell
May 24, 2011
A downed power line on the airport road near Loudy-Simpson Park caused outages for more than 1,000 homes and businesses, Yampa Valley Electric Association reported Monday afternoon.
The outage occurred at 1:42 p.m., knocking power out for 1,153 homes and businesses in southwest Craig. At about the same time, Maybell experienced a transmission line failure, affecting 276 YVEA customers.
YVEA crews were able to restore power for Maybell at about 2 p.m.
In Craig, crews brought back power for 135 customers at 2:28 p.m., moving on to another 883 by 2:50 p.m.
All customers were back on the grid by 4:45 p.m., Craig line superintendent Jeff Hergenreter said.
"The crews responded right away and did everything they could to get back the power," he said.
Hergenreter said both the downed power line and the transmission line failure were caused by lightning.
Bill Caynor, YVEA manager of operations, said the rough weather that sprung up Monday afternoon has put YVEA on alert for similar problems, though he does not expect anything drastic.
"It sounds like it's moving past Craig on the way to Steamboat," he said.
Mike Chamberlain, a forecaster for the National Weather Service, said the Craig and Moffat County area experienced "a fairly strong thunderstorm" Monday.
"There were some gusty winds and it looks like there was some hail and some pretty good lightning," he said.
Chamberlain said the weather is typical for this time of year.
"It's been a cool, showery May, but these are unsettled patterns," he said. "There may be another storm system moving in, but it should calm down by Wednesday on through the weekend. I don't think it will be as bad as earlier."
Chamberlain said Northwest Colorado residents should be aware that the tumultuous weather could kick up again.
"You always want to be on the watch for lightning," he said.
Caynor said YVEA crews will be on stand-by should any more outages occur.
"We want to get our men out there as quick as we can," he said.
