Every October, Craig's Knights of Columbus St. Michael the Archangel Council 4131 hands out Tootsie Rolls. Community members are free to take Tootsie Rolls and can choose to donate to the Knights. This year, the Knights raised $4,455 after eight days (or 60 hours) in front of City Market, giving out 18,000 pieces of candy. All contributions stayed local, split between Horizons Specialized Services and the VNA Hospice Care at Home program.

So, who are these Knights? Originally established in America in 1882 as a fraternal benefit society (named after Christopher Columbus), their founding principles are charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. They have a tradition of supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (especially through Special Olympics) as well as those who are sick. They give millions of dollars and hours of service to charities annually.

The Knights of Columbus have grown to 1.9 million members in the U.S. and abroad, with more than 15,000 councils. Membership is limited to practicing Catholic men age 18 or older. Locally, the Knights of Columbus Council 4131 was formed in 1955, and they have been handing out Tootsie Rolls since 1972.

To Richard Miller and the Knights, thank you for supporting Horizons' Moffat County programs. Thank you for bringing our community together through our shared values. Thank you for reminding us it's not how much we give, but simply giving that matters. Thank you for leading the way by loving to give.
