Moffat County elections supervisor Stephanie Beckett said she has helped more residents than usual change party affiliations in recent weeks.

The increased activity comes about a month before the deadline for residents to register to vote in the primary election.

Residents must turn in voter registration materials by July 12 to the county elections department or the state for the August primary election.

Beckett said she has also had an increase in residents wanting to check their voter registration status.

Since January, 169 Moffat County residents have registered to vote, Becket said.

Of those new registrations, 77 were Republicans, 16 were Democrats, 75 were unaffiliated and one resident registered for the American Constitution Party.

In total, there are 8,757 registered voters in Moffat County.

With the exception of residents switching their affiliations, voter registration activity has remained steady the last few months, Beckett said.

She averages about 15 to 20 registrations a week.

Residents can choose to remain unaffiliated until the primary election, then declare a party affiliation on Election Day, Beckett said.

Early voting for the primary election begins July 31. Moffat County residents will have two ways to vote early.

An electronic voting machine will be available at the Moffat County Courthouse starting Aug. 2 and ending Aug. 6. Voters must bring proper photo identification to use the voting machine.

Residents can also request a ballot in advance from the elections department. Ballots will not be mailed out, but they can be picked up from the courthouse and mailed back before Aug. 10, Beckett said.

There are several other voter registration locations throughout Craig, including the Colorado Driver’s License office, 555 Breeze St.; Moffat County Social Services, 595 Breeze St.; and Moffat County High School, 900 Finley Lane. Registration is also available at Dinosaur town hall, 333 S. Stegosaurus Fwy.

There are four voting centers in Moffat County open on election days from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. They are at Centennial Mall, 1111 W. Victory Way; Hamilton Community Center, 17400 S. Colorado Highway 13; Maybell Community Center, 103 Ellis St.; and the Dinosaur Library, 400 W. School St.

Any Moffat County resident may vote at any of the county’s voting centers.

The last day to register for the general election is Oct. 4 and early voting begins Oct. 18. The general election is Nov. 2.

Moffat County residents will vote on all but one county public office in November. County commissioner Tom Gray’s seat is the only position not up for election.
