Craig’s Gavin Thompson receives top honor from Western State

ceived Western State Colorado University's most prestigious honor for graduating seniors May 10 when he was awarded a 2013 Alumni Award for Excellence.
Thompson, who majored in English and minored in politics and government, was presented the award during a banquet the day before his May 11 graduation.
Among Thompson's accomplishments while at Western State: he was a member of the Sigma Tau Delta English honor society, for which he served as vice president; he was a regular contributor to the student newspaper, Top O' the World; he was heavily involved in fundraising efforts for Sigma Tau Delta, with recipients that included Relay For Life, Toys for Tots, the Gunnison Food Pantry, Six Points, the Gunnison Valley Animal Welfare League, the Gunnison Literacy League and Adaptive Sports; he served as a teaching assistant for English and communications classes; and he was a member of the Re-Action Theatre Ensemble, which uses theater for community dialogue and social change.
Thompson also was a member of the Native American Student Council, the Christian College campus ministry and the Academic Leadership Scholarship program. He was an ESL volunteer for the Gunnison Literacy League, an assistant coach for the Gunnison High School debate team and he also gave up several hours of each week tutoring students.
Thompson graduated magna cum laude May 11 with a 3.83 GPA.
Alumni Award for Excellence recipients are nominated by faculty and staff, and they are selected by the Alumni Board of Directors, according to a news release. Each selected student can honor a faculty or staff member who had a significant impact on their lives while at Western State. Thompson chose Dr. Alina Luna, the school's chairperson of the Department of Communication Arts, Languages and Literature.
