Craig to host nationally sanctioned BBQ event

The end of the summer will have a little extra flavor for Craig and Moffat County residents.

Craig will play host to the Colorado State BBQ Championship from Aug. 26 to Aug. 28.

Sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ Society and the Rocky Mountain BBQ Association, the competition will mark the first time such an event has ever taken place in Northwest Colorado.

The Memorial Hospital and Craig Daily Press are sponsoring the event.

"This kind of event just makes Craig more fun, and therefore a better place to live, which, in the long view, makes the recruitment and retention of professionals more successful," said George Rohrich, The Memorial Hospital chief executive officer, in a news release.

The hospital and newspaper also teamed to bring the Vietnam Moving Wall to Craig in 2007.

Hosted at the Wyman Museum, where there is more than 50 acres of space for competitors and vendors, the barbecue competition will offer Craig residents and tourists an entertainment outlet for the closing days of summer.

Dave Pike, director of Craig Parks and Recreation, has arranged for live music from local and regional bands, and numerous vendors will be on hand.

People in attendance will have the chance to watch barbecue teams from across the nation hone their talents in grilling chicken, ribs, pork and brisket.

As overseen by the Kansas City BBQ Society, certified barbecue judges will select the best among the participants, with the overall champion winning $3,500.

Rohrich, who was involved with a similar event while working with a Wyoming hospital, was instrumental in bringing the competition to Craig.

"Food brings people together and barbecue is truly one of the few true all-American foods," he said in the release.

The hospital CEO said he wanted to help give the community a boost with the event.

"The hospital needs to play a big part in the community, and it shouldn't be just health care," he said. "We took time out for the last two years to build a hospital, but now we want to recommit to contributing things in the community that will help strengthen what we have and make Craig a destination."

More details about the event will be available the middle of this month, but those interested in competing or participating as a vendor can find the necessary forms at
