Swimmer Eryn Leonard, an incoming Moffat County High School sophomore, was a state qualifier in her freshman year in the 100-meter butterfly.

The longtime swimmer is used to swimming up to 400 meters on any given race.

On Friday at the Craig Swimming Complex, she almost quadrupled that distance.

Leonard swam the 1,500-meter freestyle during the first day of the Craig Sea Sharks ABC Meet.

The meet, which started Friday and will continue at 8 a.m. today and Sunday, has Olympian Kristy Kowal as a guest speaker and instructor.

More than 200 swimmers, including 30 from Craig.

Friday was focused on the eight-and-under swimmers, and the mile, which Leonard swam in 19:47.51.

“It was very, very long,” she said. “It was good, but it was long.”

During her freshman season, Leonard’s longest event was the 400-meter individual medley.

Compared to the mile, her high school events are like sprints, Leonard said.

“For one, you need a completely different strategy for (the mile),” she said. “Most of it isn’t hard, until the end. Then, you feel like you’re about to die.”

Matt Hulstine would swim the fastest mile Friday with a time of 19:22.43.

Fellow Sea Sharks John Kirk (third) and Danielle Brockman (13th) also participated in the longest event of the weekend.

In the eight-and-under division, Alexa Neton finished fourth in the 25-meter freestyle and the 25-meter backstroke, and fifth in both the 100-meter freestyle relay and 50-meter freestyle.

Kelsey McDiffett had a third-place finish in the 25-meter breaststroke, a fifth-place finish in the 100-meter relay, two 10th place finishes in the 25-meter backstroke and 50-meter freestyle and an 11th-place finish in the 25-meter freestyle.

Anna Cooper was second in the 25-meter backstroke and fifth in the 100-meter freestyle relay.

Burke Henderson was first in the 25-meter breaststroke, third in the 25-meter freestyle, fourth in the 50-meter freestyle, fifth in the 100-meter freestyle relay and 12th in the 25-meter backstroke.

Owen Allen was second in the 25-meter backstroke and fifth in the 25-meter freestyle.

Coach Caitlin Conci said the excitement of the first meet might have affected her swimmers times.

“Sometime, I just yell ‘Go, go,’ and they go in all directions,” she said. “But, I thought they did a good job today.”

Shortly after the morning session today, which begins at 8 a.m., there will be a different kind of relay.

Caitlin and her twin sister, Kelsey Conci, along with fellow coach Katherine Dodd and Kowal, will form a relay team.

“I’m pretty excited to swim with Kelsey again,” she said. “I haven’t swam with her or Katherine in three years.

“Also, swimming with Kristy is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

The relay team will face off against two teams made up of Steamboat Springs coaches.
