National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 30 in the Centennial Mall parking lot, 1111 W. Victory Way. Residents can bring unused, unwanted or expired prescriptions drugs. Authorities will dispose of the drugs for free and no questions asked.

For the second year in a row, the Craig Police Department and Colorado State Patrol will be participating in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, police announced Tuesday.

The two agencies will be hosting a collection station from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 30 in the Centennial Mall parking lot, 1111 W. Victory Way.

Residents will be able to bring unused, unwanted or expired prescription drugs to the event, according to the release. Authorities will dispose of the drugs for free and no questions asked, police reported.

“Often the public will dispose of these items by simply throwing them down the drain or toilet,” police said in the release. “This practice is dangerous as the (Environmental Protection Agency) has detected pharmaceutical drugs in varying concentrations in the nation’s water supplies.”

The law enforcement agencies will not be collecting needles and sharps, mercury thermometers, oxygen containers, chemotherapy/radioactive substances, pressurized containers or illicit drugs.

The release cites non-medical use of prescription drugs as the second most prevalent category of drug abuse in the U.S., behind marijuana.

It states the number of visits to emergency rooms due to abuse or misuse of pharmaceutical drugs has doubled in a five-year span.

Last year’s event involved more than 3,000 law enforcement partners across the state. More than 121 tons of prescription drugs were collected, according to the release.

For more information on the event, call Sgt. John Forgay with the Craig Police Department at 826-2366.
