City of Craig Mayor Terry Carwile about the Service Line Warranty Program now being offered to Craig residents through a partnership with the National League of Cities.

Last month the City of Craig, in partnership with the National League of Cities, introduced a sewer warranty protection program for local homeowners.

The optional program, administered by Service Line Warranties of America, provides residents with the opportunity to purchase $4,000 in sewer line repair coverage for $6 per month.

The warranty also features an additional $4,000 allowance to cover public street cutting, if required for a repair, at no extra cost.

Mobile, modular and trailer homes, and mobile home parks are not included.

“Many citizens are unaware that they are responsible for the sewer lines that go from their houses to the point of utility maintenance,” said City of Craig Mayor Terry Carwile in a news release. “If these lines break or leak, repairs can be very expensive.”

The Craig City Council first hosted a workshop with National League of Cities representatives about the service line warranty program in July 2011.

Discussion about the program was conducted periodically during the following year and in May council unanimously approved the partnership with the National League of Cities to provide residents with an inexpensive option to avoid the unexpected costs associated with a sewer line break.

“We chose to participate in this program for several reasons including that it is offered at no cost to the city and it serves to educate our homeowners on their service line responsibilities, while saving them money on repairs,” Carwile said in the release. “SLWA has a perfect Better Business Bureau rating, and only uses local contractors who are familiar with our permitting and codes.

“This program could improve both water conservation and ground pollution too because we believe that residents will be more apt to quickly report any issues with their utility service lines.”

No public funds are being used to promote the program and no mailing lists were provided to SLWA by the City of Craig, the release states.

In addition to providing a new benefit option, city council voted to apply its royalty associated with the program back to its residents, which is reflected in the low monthly premium, the release states.

“We are pleased to work with the City of Craig to offer homeowners an affordable service line warranty program,” said Brad Carmichael, vice president of business development for SLWA, in the release. “We think Craig residents will be pleased with our features and benefits, including a 24 hour repair hotline and the use of local, certified technicians.

“This keeps dollars in the local economy, an important benefit in these tough financial times.”

SLWA is an affiliate of Canonsburg, Pa.-based Utility Service Partners, Inc.

The National League of Cities serves as a resource and an advocate for more than 19,000 cities, towns and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans.
