Craig Middle School football slams Rifle

The Craig Middle School football teams were prepared to reclaim victory Saturday morning after their first loss of the season earlier in the week.

And, by that afternoon, the teams had regained that winning feeling.

The seventh- and eighth-grade teams each won their Saturday games in Rifle. The seventh-grade Bulldogs came out on top, 43-32, while the eighth-grade finished the day 46-16.

Seventh-grade head coach Matt Ray said he was proud of his team for proving steadfast in their hardest-fought game yet.

"I'd say it was their first real challenge this year," he said.

Ray said the team suffered a recurring setback during kickoffs. Three of Rifle's touchdowns came as a result of kickoff returns.

"Our special teams hurt us a little bit, but our offense and defense still did well," he said.

Ray was also on the sidelines for the eighth-grade game, where CMS led 30-0 at the end of the first half. Though a pair of Rifle touchdowns in the second half prevented a shutout, the Bulldogs still ended the game with a 30-point margin.

"They really had a complete game," Ray said.

Ray said both teams were hungry for a win after losing during a combined game Tuesday against Soroco. The loss was the first of the season for the seventh- and eighth-graders.

"The Soroco game was still a great chance for the guys on B-team to get some more playing time," he said.

Both teams maintain a 5-1 record. CMS football's final game of the season is Oct. 8 in Steamboat Springs.

Ray said he has confidence the teams will finish on a high note.

"We beat Steamboat earlier this season, so all we need to do is keep playing hard," he said.
