Craig lodging tax committee meeting tonight

Committee to focus on finalizing ballot question language

Craig Daily Press Staff Report

The Craig lodging tax committee will meet at 6 p.m. today at Craig City Hall, 300 W. Fourth St., in the downstairs meeting room.

The committee will try to finalize language of a proposed ballot question to submit to the Craig City Council. The final decision to put the question before voters in November rests with the council.

The committee has met twice before and set two parameters of the ballot question — fixing the tax percentage at 6.9 percent, and determining how the money will be allocated.

Three percent will go to marketing, promotions and event funding. Another 3 percent will fund capitol projects, such as a visitor center and/or community center.

The Craig/Moffat Economic Development Partnership will receive .6 percent, and .3 percent will be used for community beautification projects.

Craig City Council member Terry Carwile originally proposed the lodging tax idea in March. He contends the tax can be used to bolster the local economy.

The city council formed the volunteer lodging tax committee to draft details of the ballot question.

Moffat County government currently implements a 1.9-percent lodging tax, which funds the Moffat County Tourism Association.

If Craig voters approve a city lodging tax, the county would not be able to collect its tax within city limits.
