Craig fitness gurus ask community to tough it out to honor fallen soldier in Memorial Day Workout
Memorial Day serves as a way for civilians to express their appreciation for the sacrifice made by soldiers in wartime, but the people of Northwest Colorado will have a greater opportunity to empathize with those who have served.
The Murphy Memorial Day Workout takes place Monday, a competitive fitness event that honors the life of slain soldier Lt. Michael P. Murphy.
Murphy was a Navy SEAL who was killed in action during a 2005 mission in Afghanistan, during which he risked his life attempting to call in support for his small team, an incident told in the book and film “Lone Survivor.”
Travis Linsacum, owner of local exercise outlet LinsFITT, is one of the organizers of the workout event. He noted that such projects are not unique to Craig and are frequent in the fitness community.
“We can only imagine what they’ve been through,” he said of the physical demands soldiers endured by soldiers.
The workout at the Moffat County High School track and gym, sponsored by LinsFITT and The Weelhouse — previously Legion Fitness — starts with a one-mile run.
That leads into 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups and 300 squats, ending with an additional mile jaunt. Participants can work in two-person teams and also have the option to wear body armor or other weight, which will allow them to better understand what it’s like to be in a combat zone.
“It’s kind of a fun way for us to suffer a little bit for people who suffered a lot for us,” Linsacum said.
The event will also serve as a fundraiser for another good cause. Money brought in from participants will be donated to JP Price and family to go toward his goal of purchasing a specialty wheelchair.
Registration begins at 9 a.m. at MCHS. The cost is $25 per person or $50 per team. Spectators are welcome.
