Since mid-January, officials from counties around the state have worked on developing a bottom-up economic development plan for Colorado.
A regional meeting next week in Craig, hosted by the state's Office of Economic Development and International Trade, is another step in the process of developing that plan.
Representatives from the five counties that make up the Department of Local Affairs' Region 11 — Moffat, Routt, Rio Blanco, Mesa and Garfield — are expected to attend the meeting.
Also participating will be the Craig/Moffat Economic Development Partnership, Craig Chamber of Commerce, Colorado Small Business Development Center, Colorado State University Extension Office, and the Department of Local Affairs.
"We are delighted to be hosting the regional economic development strategy meeting in Craig and welcome the many economic development representatives from our region," EDP Executive Director Darcy Owens-Trask said. "We look forward to working together to create a regional and statewide plan that meets the needs of individual counties and of the state as a whole."
The meeting is scheduled from 3 to 5:30 p.m., March 9 at The Center of Craig, 601 Yampa Ave.
Dwayne Romero, executive director of the Office of Economic Development and International Trade, is slated to give a presentation. Later, county representatives will break into small groups to discuss local and regional plans.
Residents and people from the business community can attend by contacting Owens-Trask at 826-2039, but space at the meeting is limited.
Regional plans are the second phase of building an economic development plan for the state.
The process began in January following an executive order from Gov. John Hickenlooper.
Each county in the state is working on a local economic development plan. Those plans will then be weaved into regional plans, which will eventually be used to develop the state's plan in May.
Since the governor's order, EDP has worked to gather community input on Moffat County's plan, which is still in the draft stages.
Next week's meeting is the second scheduled to help with forming a regional plan.
A meeting in Grand Junction was scheduled for March 15, but has been postponed to a future date.
The economic development meeting is taking place the same day Hickenlooper will be in Craig for the Chamber's State of the County event.
Owens-Trask said Hickenlooper hopes to attend the second half of the economic development meeting, if his schedule allows it.
