At its monthly meeting Thursday, the Craig Chamber of Commerce Board voted two new members onto the board.

The board voted unanimously to elect Steve Herman, a Realtor with Re/Max About You, and Ryan Duran, owner of Eastside Liquor, to the board. They replace resigning members Joe Bird and Clay Russell and will complete the former members’ terms.

Nominate a business

The Craig Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for future Chamber Select business awards.

To nominate a business, call the Craig Chamber of Commerce at 824-5689, e-mail director@craig-ch…, or mail a nomination to 360 E. Victory Way, Craig, CO 81625.

Danny Griffith doesn't claim to be the easiest boss to work for.

"I've been guilty of making my girls cry because I'm so hard on them," he said Thursday. "They work hard because they don't want to disappoint me."

Griffith has owned J.W. Snack's Bar & Grill, 210 E. Victory Way, with his wife, Teri, for five-and-a-half years.

And, his commitment to demanding the best from his staff is part of what earned him the first Chamber Select business award Thursday from the Craig Chamber of Commerce Board.

Following its monthly meeting Thursday at the Chamber's conference room, the board gathered at J.W. Snack's to surprise the restaurant owners with the award.

Christina Oxley, executive director of the Chamber, said J.W. Snack's was selected for the award because of its clean and welcoming atmosphere, efficient service and quality of food.

"The people we talk to always have a really superior experience in here," Oxley said.

Thursday's award was the first of many the Chamber intends to present to local businesses. Businesses chosen receive a certificate, window sticker, and recognition on the Chamber's website and in its newsletter.

The first three awards will be board-driven as the group launches the program. Going forward, Oxley said she intends for the community to initiate recommending businesses for the Chamber Select award.

"The hope is the community gets more involved and starts nominating businesses," Oxley said. "And, I think that has a lot of meaning for businesses, too, when their staff, their customers or other businesses think enough of them to make that nomination."

To be eligible, businesses need to be a Chamber of Commerce member and receive three nominations. Additionally, businesses are evaluated on customer service, cleanliness and community involvement.

"The fact that a business is interested in serving the community shows that they're a forward-thinking business not just open for today or today's dollar," Oxley said.

She said that J.W. Snack's involvement with the Northwest Colorado Chapter of Parrotheads demonstrates the dedication to the community the Chamber board was seeking.

Equally as important, Oxley said, is customers' eagerness to return to the restaurant time and time again for consistently good service, food and atmosphere.

"The whole idea, the concept, is to make people feel like they're not in Craig," Griffith said of his restaurant. "They can stop in for lunch and feel like they're on vacation."

And even though he pushes his employees to deliver top-notch service, Griffith said he considers his staff family.

"We don't just hire the first person who walks in," Griffith said. "Because it's like a family, it's hard to get someone to walk in and fit in. You're letting someone in the family."
