Craig Chamber director expresses concerns on visitor center funding
November 24, 2015
Craig Chamber of Commerce Director Christina Oxley addressed the Moffat County Commissioners at their weekly meeting Tuesday morning regarding the funding of the Moffat County Visitor Center in 2016.
"Funding the operation of the visitor center was cut fairly significantly, to a point where operating a visitor center is likely not going to be possible," she said.
Oxley said the draft budget shows a $32,000 cut in funding for the visitor center's operational costs, which more or less equates to two staff positions.
Commissioner Chuck Grobe said the 2016 budget is not final and funding had not been cut yet.
"Your money is still in there," he said. "It's in a different line item. We put all the tourism…in a separate line item for now, just to keep the money there. We haven't allotted anything yet."
Oxley emphasized the importance of the visitor center's role in promoting tourism, especially with the recent push to diversify the regional economy.
