Bill Sawer to lead new CNCC program offering class credit

Craig resident Bill Sawer knows soccer.

He built his own field of dreams in his backyard and, this fall, will again welcome players on it.

Now, he's adding to his resume in the sport.

Sawer, who has coached for more than 40 years, will take the helm of Colorado Northwestern Community College's soccer team this fall at the Craig campus.

The soccer program, which will begin at 6 p.m. Aug. 23, will be offered as a class, and the credits will be transferable.

"It's a great opportunity for people looking for some social interaction," he said. "It's also a great way to stay in shape and play a competitive sport."

Sawer said he is trying to schedule games with Colorado Mountain College in Steamboat Springs, Glenwood Springs and Leadville, as well as a game against Rangely's CNCC campus.

The first practice will be at Sawer's field, which is located on First Street.

"We will have three practices in August," he said. "Then, two weeks later, we will begin playing games."

Games will be played on Sundays and practices will be on days when there are no MCHS soccer games, Sawer said.

"That way parents won't miss their kids games," he said. "And the kids can drop by to watch their parents play."

There is no age limit, and the team will be coed.

It will count for a physical education credit, and the class will finish in October.

There are four ways to sign up, Sawer said.

"You can go in person to CNCC," he said. "You can do it online, you can do it by the mail or you can send a fax."

Sawer said the team has already attracted recent Moffat County High School graduates, as well as other members of the community.

In addition to providing people a way to get exercise and interact, Sawer has one other goal for his team.

"I want to turn a group of people into a team," he said. "I think we could win some games."

Sawer previously coached at Colorado Mountain College in Steamboat Springs, where he had success.

He said he would like to replicate that success in Craig.

When CNCC builds dormitories as part of new construction and expansion project west of Craig, Sawer said the soccer team would have a larger pool of players who could participate.

"This is a foundation for the future," he said. "Next year, we'll have the same coach, same practice times, same field and same schedule."
