CNCC hosts chili cook-off Saturday

Colorado Northwestern Community College is gearing up for its first chili cook-off this weekend.

The event — scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday — is a fundraiser, said Student Government Vice President Sean Smith.

“We’re looking to do a fundraiser for our student council,” Smith said. “We do many different things with (the money).”

Among the council’s plans for the funds are sponsoring a CNCC essay contest in which two winning students will win airfare and lodging for a spring break trip to Rome, Italy.

Smith said that some of the council’s yearly budget will also be set aside for community projects.

“Since we’re a community college, we’re here for our community,” said Smith, 20.

Local cooks are encouraged to submit their chili to the event judges for a fee of $15. Community members can also taste the chili entries for a fee of $7, or $20 for a family. Admission is free for kids ages 5 and younger.

Judges will award prizes to the best red chili and green chili. Another prize — the Tasters’ Choice Award — will be chosen by the event’s attendees.

“We got some amazing donations for the prizes,” Smith said.

Those prizes include gift certificates to Murdoch’s Ranch & Home Supply, Vallarta’s Mexican Restaurant, and Wal-Mart. There will also be a door prize for one attendee.

Contestants should enter about two gallons of chili. Smith said there is still space available for cooks to enter the contest.

To enter the contest or for more information, call Sean Smith at 629-3808, or visit the college.
